Friday, Nintendo released its new installment of Nintendo Direct. Some say it was lackluster, but it was exactly what Nintendo said it was going to be. There was one big announcement, but this article is not really about the latest Nintendo Direct. This is a series of articles about all the good news Nintendo fans should be excited about. In the midst of disaster and bad press, we take a stand to share with you the following. There is good news for Wii U. It’s not as dark as many paint it to be. Yes, things are not optimal but is far brighter than it’s perceived. Today, we are going to focus on one aspect of the Wii U, exclusivity.

Wii U, The Exclusive Console

Like many of you know, exclusivity is big for any type of business. We could argue that Facebook became popular because of its exclusivity, or even our dearly Neogaf. However, third-party exclusives became a thing of the past this generation. After the whole PS3 vs Xbox 360 debacle ended, both of these consoles ended up receiving all the third-party games that would come out. Mostly, third-party publishers didn’t see much benefit in releasing their games in just one console. In spite of this, Nintendo has now travelled back in time and has brought back third-party exclusivity, in addition to Nintendo’s own first party exclusives. What third-party exclusives, you ask? Well, let’s see…

First of all, let’s go back to right before the Wii U’s launch. Nintendo held a small conference a couple of months after E3 to showcase some unknown aspects of the Wii U. During that presentation Nintendo announced that Bayonetta 2 was going to be a Wii U exclusive. This news was received with a big outcry of hate and disgust. And yes, that is a good thing. But little did we know that this was just the beginning and a small glimpse of what was to come. Even before Bayonetta 2, Nintendo announced The Wonderful 101 at E3 2012 as an exclusive title for Wii U, in addition to Lego City Undercover and ZombiU, but these are new IPs so their impact is smaller.

In January, Nintendo held its first 2013 Nintendo Direct focusing on Wii U. In this Nintendo Direct Iwata revealed that Nintendo is doing collaborations with different third-party developers. As an example of that, they showed us a trailer for a new collaboration title called Shin Mengami Tensei X Fire Emblem, also exclusive, of course. Iwata also mentioned that there are other collaboration titles in the works that he would announce on another day, but that was somewhat put on the back-end. In addition to this new collaboration, before the Direct was done, Iwata showed us a trailer of X. You guessed it, another exclusive title for the Wii U developed by Monolith Soft. Now, let’s fast forward to Friday. Nintendo announces that they have a new worldwide partnership with Sega which claims the next 3 Sonic games as Wii U exclusives. These include Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Sonic: Lost World, and an unannounced title. Furthermore, add in Scribblenauts Unmasked which was just announced a couple of days ago. That’s around 9 exclusive titles being developed for Wii U by a third-party.

Honestly, that’s a lot of exclusive titles for a console that is “doomed” or “dead.” And I’m not even taking into account all the exclusive indie games and other collaborations that are in the horizon. I understand the concern of many people, even though some just do it for fun. Truth be told, there is a lot to look forward we just need to wait a bit longer.
